What is a rule of life?
The Habitus Community centres its life around a shared rule of life. But what is a rule of life?
A rule is an ancient “life-hack” for following Jesus in a complex and contested world. A rule is a structure, a pattern of habits and practices - of mind and body - that nurtures a distinct way of life. Our rule follows the practices of Jesus, aiming to rehumanize our lives and grow a habitus of love for God and neighbor.
"Living by a rule of life” notes theologian Simon Chan “is what turns one into a regular Christian.” This is not elite Christianity or super-hero faithfulness. What’s in sight in a rule of life is regular Christianity - the ordinary living out of everyday faith, the small acts of prayer, community, service and devotion that recalibrate all of life toward the obligations of love.
“The goal of having a rule is not to achieve a balanced life per se, but to live with Christ at the center of all we do.”
